One thousand years before Christ, the first king of the Israelites, Saul, struggles to unify the 12 Israelite tribes and defend his fledgling nation against savage enemy attacks. The prophet Samuel relays a message from God to King Saul that he must destroy one of Israel's ancient enemies. But when Saul defies that message, Samuel prophesies that the Lord will tear the kingdom of Israel from him and choose another in his place. In time, Saul comes to realize that his greatest threat will not come from his enemies, but from the shepherd, David.

King Saul attempts to defend his kingdom by offering a strategic marriage for his daughter, Merav. Samuel gives Saul a message from God.
Saul confides his worries in David. Ishbaal hires an assassin to kill the prophet. Ahinoam, in an effort to unite the tribes of Israel, proposes a strategic marriage. A traitor is exposed. David returns home, where he receives life-altering news from a surprise visitor.
Saul offers any man who beats Goliath a bounty and the hand of his daughter in marriage and, to everyone's surprise, David accepts the challenge. Michal escapes Gibeah, believing her place is by her father's side at the battlefield. Rizpah's true origins are revealed. David's older brother, Eliab, inadvertently helps David realize his destiny.
David realizes his feelings for Michal and devises a plan to marry her instead of Merav. Michal asks Jonathan to watch out for David. Ishbal seeks to travel to Bethlehem in order to learn about David. Ahinoam is angered by David's humiliation of Merav. Saul, who empathizes with David's plight, pledged to be faithful and more loving toward Ahimoam.
