David Carter learns about his heritage and the danger he is in the hard way when he is attacked by telekinetics, and mysterious ""Tall Men"", and sees his house and mother dissappear in a ball of light.
After escaping to Maple island, Rafe reveals David's heritage to him, and begins training him in the use of the Exotar.
Rafe leads an Ooshati attack on the Dragit's base, seeking to avert the imminent invasion. David is ordered to stay behind, as survival is unlikely.
Alone in the Utah Badlands, David is attacked by a Mangler, who fortunately turns out to be the pet of a former Tyrusian soldier who ""went native"".
David returns to Maple island, and directs an Ooshati ship to destroy the secret base that is flinging meteors to earth.
David is seemingly pursued by enemies on all sides. A telekinetic showdown with Simon and Sonia is going well, until the Tall Men show up.
The next thing he knows, David is being awakened on a ship approaching Tyruse. Here he is met by the Dragit who tries to gain his alleigence.
After his escape, David contacts the only people who he can count as allies. Together they formulate a plan to warn the President.
General Gordon places numerous obstacles between them and the President, delaying them in their mission. Eventually they break through, but are they too late?
Doc eventually manages to contact David, and they arrange to meet. The Tyrusian renegade has a plan to defeat the Dragit's invasion, but they will have to work together.
As General Gordon continues to pursue them, they infiltrate the Cape Kennedy space center with the help of an insider. .
