Aracy de Carvalho is a young clerk at the Brazilian Consulate. For two years, she has been secretly issuing passports to Jews without the dreaded "J" stamp, which not only won't allow them to travel, but will doom them to the horrors of concentration camps. When newly appointed diplomat, João Guimarães Rosa, arrives in Hamburg, the two fall madly in love. Aracy would later be honored by the Yad Vashem with the Righteous Among the Nations Award. João would be known as the greatest Brazilian writer of the twentieth century.

João Guimarães Rosa is sent to Hamburg and is introduced to Aracy at the consulate. The repression of Jews increases. Vivi is bothered by young Nazis, but Zumkle makes them stop.
The murder of a German diplomat by a Jew leads to Crystal Night. Helena tries to convince Vivi to spy on SS officers. Rudi is arrested. João discovers Aracy's scheme.
Zumkle promises Vivi that he will free his father. The captain follows Aracy and discovers that she is helping Hugo and Margarethe. João and Aracy are observed by Zumkle.
Zumkle takes advantage of the expropriation of non-Aryan businesses. Vivi decides to help Helena by getting information for the resistance. Zumkle makes a false complaint against João.
Gestapo investigates Hardner and João. Vivi seduces Schaffer to get information. Zumkle tries to force Aracy a kiss; she hits him. Schaffer discovers that Vivi is Jewish.
Rudi and Helena participate in a frustrated attack on Goebbels at the Embassy of Portugal, where Aracy and João were. A bomb hits the Brazilian consulate.
