The story follows Akari Taiyo, a 12-year-girl who becomes the wielder of card "The Sun" and joins the mysterious organization "Sefiro Fiore" to confront the Daemonia along other card wielders. However, it does not take long for Akari to learn that with their duty comes an unbearable guilt, as to defeat the Daemonia, the humans afflicted by them must perish as well.

Akari Taiyo, a 12-year-old fortuneteller, is attacked by a flaming monster, but is rescued by three magical girls who kill the monster and bring her out of a burning house.
Akari is brought to Sephiro Fiore and she joins fellow newcomers Seira, Ginka and Luna as they head off to fight the Daemonias.
Saying she can't fight anymore, Akari runs away from the organization and stops Meltina and Priscilla from attacking a Daemonia.
After Akari finds out that she can hear the voices of the Daemonia, she decides to participate in the fight so she can find her own answers.
Ginka's father, who helps fund Sefiro Fiore's operations, has come to visit and invites the girls to a fancy party; Ginka and Yataro reunite with someone they know.
Seira helps Priscilla and Meltina fight a pair of Daemonia; Seira asks to join Priscilla's team, but is convinced to give Akari's team one more chance.
Not wanting to concern the girls with a new development, Etia gives them a day off which the use to tour the city; the girls meet Akari's old fortune-telling mentors.
Etia reveals her findings and begs the girls to flee should they encounter their counterpart; the girls fight against a Daemonia and they come face to face with Ginka's counterpart card.
As everyone in Sefiro Fiore becomes saddened and frightened by Ginka's disappearance, Luna recalls how her twin sister, Serena, disappeared and contemplates her feelings for Akari.
Controlled by Cerebrum, Luna heads to Sefiro Fiore where Akari and Seira are unsure how to counter her attacks; the counterpart cards for The Fool and The Magician appear in front of Priscilla and Meltina.
Forced out of Sefiro Fiore, Akari and the others head to Nagasaki's mansion seeking help; Seira continues her lone search for Luna; Akari finds out about her birth.
Seira is deeply hurt that she is forced to fight her friend; Akari learns the truth about herself and goes to Cerebrum to ask what he really wants.
Akari keeps reliving the anniversary of her mother's death and tries to choose her own fate; Seira, Luna and Ginka go into the final battle.
