On the eve of Gypsy Rose Blanchard’s parole hearing, after spending nearly seven years in prison for the murder of her mother, she is ready to share shocking revelations and disturbing secrets for the first time. The now 31-year-old takes us into her earliest childhood memories of unfounded medical conditions and allegations of sexual abuse.
When Hurricane Katrina devastates Louisiana, Gypsy and her mother, Dee Dee, are relocated to Springfield, Missouri. There, Gypsy comes to the grim realization she’s addicted to pain medication. And when Gypsy runs away to be with her new boyfriend, there will be hell to pay.
After running away, Gypsy is lured home by her mother with promises of freedom and independence. Behind closed doors, Dee Dee chains Gypsy to the bed and uses witchcraft to put a voodoo hex on her daughter. With no end in sight from a life of abuse and fear, a desperate Gypsy pulls a loaded gun on her mother leading to a shocking turn of events.
Desperate to escape her mother, Dee Dee, Gypsy turns to Nick Godejohn, her long-distance boyfriend from a Christian dating site. The young couple hatches a plan to murder Dee Dee and be together forever. As Gypsy recalls the details of that fateful night, she goes before the parole board and learns whether she’ll get an early release from prison.
Gypsy reveals a life-changing secret she’s been keeping from even her closest family members: she is engaged to be married. While she and her fiance divulge the intimate details of their friendship turned romance–and their upcoming prison wedding–Gypsy recalls appearing in court for her mother’s murder as her life of lies unfolds before a stunned community.
Less than two weeks before her wedding, cold feet and past loves haunt Gypsy and threaten her impending nuptials. While some family members plead with Gypsy to postpone the wedding, her fiance meets with them and argues otherwise. With the biggest day of her life drawing near, Gypsy faces her greatest fears: does she deserve to be happy, and will she ever find a lasting love?
