Day in and day out, Tony reviews the files of the newly dead and decides singlehandedly whether they're approved or denied to get into Heaven. Tony has to audit several key figures from history who’ve been waiting for decades, if not centuries because their cases were misfiled, and has a hard time judging people from the past by modern ethical standards.
Tony decides he's had enough of Purgatory and his arch nemesis golden boy, Chad Bradley, so devises a plan to get himself transferred or get Chad Bradley to quit for good... nothing goes as planned.
After the Purgatory lights shut off, computers shut down, and pens all stop working, Tony must use his cunning wit to figure out which of three executed clones sent from the future is a murderer destined for Hell.
One of Tony's files is reviewed and big errors are found, so Death sends him on a business trip to Heaven with Chad Bradley to personally deliver the bad news and transfer the client to Hell.
A huge influx of newly dead people puts a crunch on Purgatory's whole system, but Death finds an easy way out of doing all that paperwork by making his employees play a winner-take-all baseball game.
To save time, Death sends Tony back to Earth to do pre-audits of living people who are pre-approved for certain Heaven or Hell packages, as long as they sign a form saying they won't deviate from their current life paths.
Tony finds out that everyone in the office has been betting on whether he sends his clients to Heaven or Hell, and gets pressured to "fix the game" when his popularity grows and they're all betting on certain outcomes.
When Tony discovers the secret Soulmate Clause in the Purgatory Handbook that he didn't know existed, he tries to find the woman he loved in life but ends up uncovering the truth to his own untimely death.
