Created by Agnes Nixon, the series was the first daytime drama to primarily feature ethnically and socioeconomically diverse characters and consistently emphasize social issues. One Life to Live was expanded from 30 minutes to 45 minutes on July 26, 1976, and then to an hour on January 16, 1978.

Rex informs R.J. that he has found a way to pay his mortgage, but things nearly hit a snag when Nigel spots Roxy talking to the arsonist. Kelly confides in Kevin about her role in Paul's 'death', and Kevin is upset that she went to Todd instead of him. Kathryn admits to Paul that her plan is to keep the missing drug money for herself.
Kelly is shocked to see Paul alive and well, but refuses to help her brother despite all that he has done for her, and after she turns him down, he is grabbed by thugs. Starr sneaks out of her house to go see Travis, but he surprises her when he forces her to go back home, telling her he doesn't want their relationship like that. Blair asks Todd to be honest with her, and he finally is able to convince her he never slept with Kelly, but she still isn't ready for a reconciliation.
Todd and Kelly try desperately to figure out why Natalie is involved in blackmailing them, but it's John who comes face to face with Paul. Rex and Roxy decide to hire someone to burn down Foxy Roxy's so that they can cash in on the insurance money. When Matthew seeks romantic advice from Asa, he advises him to make Starr jealous if he wants to steal her from Travis.
Adriana has mixed emotions when Antonio tells her that Carlotta is her aunt and that he is her cousin through her father, Manuel Santi. Dorian accepts Viki's offer to become chief of staff, but refuses to help Viki go to Jessica's grad, so Kevin steps in. Jen is devastated to learn that in trying to help Riley (by turning in the Internet-bought term paper), she really hurt him.
Dorian is devastated to learn that the majority of Adriana's inheritance was lost due to bad investments. Todd and Kelly reluctantly admit to David that they're being blackmailed by someone who claims to have seen them bury Paul in the landfill. Matthew is jealous when he sees Starr and Travis together.
Paul convinces Natalie to help him blackmail Todd and Kelly into giving him the $20,000 he needs to leave town, but Todd and Kelly are waylaid on their way to Atlantic City. Although Riley buys a term paper off the Internet, he decides at the last minute not to use it, and hands in his own. Initially reluctant, Blair agrees to let Starr go to the movies with Travis.
Antonio realises that Manuel's birth surname, Espinoza, is the same as Carlotta's maiden name. When he questions her, she admits that he was her brother. She begs him to stay quiet so Adriana won't die like Manuel's first wife and son.
Nora has an encounter with Troy, who insists that he's not the Music Box Killer. Nora comes to the realization that maybe Troy isn't. However, Troy ran off when Nora suggested that he tell Bo what he told her. Meanwhile, Kevin and Blair make love in a hotel room at the Palace. After Blair leaves, Kelly arrives and tells Kevin that their divorce will not be simple like he hopes. At Dorian's house, Blair tells Todd that she slept with Kevin. Todd begins to menace Blair. Meanwhile, Dorian and David share a midnight kiss. Marcie is angry when Michael/Al kisses her. Bo finds the latest victim of the Music Box Killer: Gabrielle.
Antonio tells a startled Cris that Natalie was supposed to throw the match then revealed that John is a FBI Agent. Natalie and Jessica are held hostage by Flynn. Luna urges Max to focus on Frank and Leslie's needs. Flynn orders John to kill Natalie and Jessica.
Jessica grows curious after spotting Antonio talking to John. Starr warns Dorian not to meddle in Blair's romance with Walker. After Natalie wins the Championship, John drags her upstairs to face Flynn.
Flynn threatens to expose Walker's masquerade unless he comes up with the money. Bo confides in Nora that he and Gabrielle are having problems. Al pays Marcie another visit. Flynn warns John. Paul admits to Dorian that he once had an alcohol problem.
Al encourages Marcie to enter the Search and Destroy singing contest Rex has scheduled at Ultraviolet. After Jen manages to catch Madison admitting to Marcie's hazing on tape, Madison is expelled and vows revenge. Daniel shows his dark side when he turns abusive toward Riley after getting drunk.
Starr is upset about Walker and Blair's relationship until Walker confesses a secret to her. Jessica and Antonio are shocked to wake up and find Keri in the room with them. Dorian realises that if Kelly gets pregnant, she could endanger her own life.
Kelly is shocked when Asa accurately points out her worry that Kevin is sleeping with Blair. When Kevin shows up, Asa pushes the couple to cement their relationship by having a baby.
While Jessica and Antonio cement their relationship by making love, Keri tells R.J. that as long as Jessica is out of the picture, Antonio can see Jamie all he wants. When she shows up and finds Jessica in a towel, she tells Antonio there's no way he's getting near their daughter.
While in the Dominican Republic, Rex tries to remind Jen of how wonderful their marriage was. She's not interested in listening, and reminds him how he took everything from her. So Rex makes her a deal ... if she gets naked, he'll return her father's house.
When Marcie agrees to press charges against Deke Bronson, one of the guys who attacked her, his girlfriend Madison is furious and vows revenge, and later asks Marcie to join her sorority.
While Kelly and Blair have a girl talk about romance, Kevin and Walker have a confrontation. Kevin warns Walker away from Blair, and Walker accuses him of wanting to sleep with her.
Al begs Marcie to give up on her crusading, just for a little while, after she receives death threats but she refuses, and later finds herself in the midst of a situation she cannot handle.
Blair is surprised when Walker easily locate's Todd's keys, but he assures her that he previously searched the residence. Starr and Matthew, plotting to get Bo and Nora together, deliberately throw a monkey wrench in Gabrielle's attempts to find Bo. Antonio tells Jessica that Mitch died from a blow to the head, and pushes her into confessing.
Natalie and Cristian both dream of their upcoming wedding, and neither can put aside the worries that the Lord and Vega families can never truly connect as one.
During a family reunion, Viki is upset when she realises that Todd's ring, something he received from Victor, is missing. Later, Walker has a confrontation with Starr in the Sun's publishing office, and rubs a gold ring with an L on it after leaving. After speaking with Viki and Rex (who refuses to let her go), Jen breaks things off with Joe to stop him from leaving the ministry.
