The huge challenge laid out to Finn Bálor by Shinsuke Nakamura was all the NXT Universe could talk about since last Wednesday. While Bálor seemingly accepted the challenge on the spot, nothing formal was set up for the showdown. NXT General Manager William Regal promised to change that tonight.
Finn Bálor took to the ring to ask what was next for him after coming up short at TakeOver. It didn't take long for Bálor to find out what lies ahead, as Shinsuke Nakamura issued a challenge to the former NXT Champion!
Tensions were running high in NXT, with TakeOver: The End… just one week away. Everyone was on edge, including NXT Tag Team Champions The Revival. Scott Dawson & Dash Wilder declared that they were going to take back their titles from American Alpha. Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa disagreed, saying that not only can’t The Revival beat Jason Jordan & Chad Gable, Dash & Dawson couldn’t beat them. The trash-talking led to a scuffle between the two teams, with Gargano & Ciampa sending the No. 1 contenders scrambling up the ramp, setting the stage for a showdown between the duos later in the evening.
After the brutal ending to last week’s match between Bayley and Nia Jax, NXT General Manager William Regal revealed that Bayley was not cleared to compete and would not be cleared in time to get her rematch against NXT Women’s Champion Asuka at TakeOver on June 8. Though Bayley will get her opportunity down the line, Regal announced that Nia Jax, Carmella and Alexa Bliss would square off in the evening’s main event to determine Asuka’s challenger in two weeks.
As the NXT Universe was still reeling from the major announcement that Samoa Joe and Finn Bálor’s huge NXT Championship Match at TakeOver would be contested inside a steel cage, they were surprised for a second time this week, as two of NXT’s newest stars joined forces for a big tag team encounter!
Finn Bálor made his long-awaited return to NXT this week, his first appearance since Samoa Joe ended his 292-day reign as NXT Champion. The Demon didn’t mince words, saying that all of his matches with the submission specialist could have gone either way. But before he could elaborate, his opponent in the main event, Elias Samson, interrupted Bálor with a song mocking the former champion. Bálor put an end to the impromptu concert, silencing The Drifter with a Pele Kick ahead of their battle.
Much has changed since NXT’s last event in Orlando. All three championships have changed hands, with Samoa Joe standing atop the mountain as NXT Champion. The rest of the roster is scrambling for the right to challenge for the titles, but as NXT becomes the place to be in sports-entertainment, the NXT Superstars are finding themselves competing with new challengers from outside the ranks of WWE.

NXT General Manager William Regal wasted no time in kicking 2016 off the right way. After thanking the NXT Universe for their incredible support in 2015 and reiterating that Bayley’s next challenger would be determined in the evening’s main event, Regal welcomed Sami Zayn back to the Full Sail Arena for the first time since his injury.
