As the competitors enter their third and final lap, the rain starts to ease, but the change in weather conditions brings with it something unexpected.
A mistake by Oishi sees him exit the race, but he's not the only driver experiencing difficulties as the rain intensifies.
While Kanata continues to keep pace in the wet conditions with the ever-expanding third-place group, Sawatari dukes it out with Beckenbauer for the lead of the race.
Katagiri Kanata drives his Toyota 86 GT remarkably fast, even though he lacks grip on the wet road, and overtakes several more powerful cars. Ikeda praises Kanata's precise driving technique and his experience on European racetracks, which help him under these conditions.
On the wet track, Kanata Katagiri impresses with his driving skills. Despite difficult weather conditions, he remains steady in the race, while his competitors struggle with the weather.
Katagiri Kanata shows what he's made of in the race on the Ashinoko track! With daring drifts through the dangerous "Death Zone," he secures a provisional eighth place despite tough competition and technical challenges.
Ren's mother discovers the secret to Kanata's prodigious talent and the two reminisce about his much-missed mother, Katherine. Meanwhile, Sawatari's monster lap has unsettled the drivers who are still yet to set a time.
Qualifying begins for the second race of the season, which is set to take place at Lake Ashinoko. With Kanata set to do his run on a later day, other drivers get their moment to shine.
Kanata managed to haul the 86 up to unexpected heights at Odawara Pikes Peak, but the next race is on a course that is a lot flatter with fewer downhill sections where he can make up for his car's lack of power, so it's time to tune his ride!
After making up a bunch of places in the death zone, Kanata enters the final sector, but with the long straight at the end of the lap highlighting the 86's main weakness, can he hold on to his current position all the way to the checkered flag?
On the approach to the death zone for the second time, Kanata starts to make his move. But does he have enough life left in his tires to climb up the order?
While everyone is suitably impressed with what Kanata is achieving, there are battles up and down the field, and it quickly becomes apparent that the 86 isn't the only car the MFG viewers should be keeping a close eye on.
Kanata zooms up to the back of the Yashi-Kita Gang in no time, but getting past them is another matter entirely. Meanwhile, the two leaders go wheel-to-wheel for the lead of the race.
