Terry and June Medford are both middle aged and beginning to find the trials of life are more difficult as they try to succeed in their daily lives. The couple have just moved to Purley, south-east London... Aunt Lucy and the mynah bird had disappeared, as had the occasionally visiting daughters. Terry and June now mixed with a friendly next door neighbour, Beattie; Terry's chatty work colleague, Malcolm; and their gruff boss Sir Dennis Hodge. Otherwise, things were much as before, with Terry's pigheaded childishness causing no end of problems, usually thwarting June's attempts at leading a cosy life.

Terry and June play the cow in the office pantomime but have difficulty getting out of their costume when the hall is evacuated because of a fire scare.
Terry experiences pangs of jealousy when June arranges to meet a childhood sweetheart. Advice from Sir Dennis compounds the situation.
Terry loves to be the centre of attention - until he discovers he bears an uncanny resemblance to a criminal.
Terry and June offer to run the local pub despite Malcolm reminding Terry that Sir Dennis forbids his employees having second jobs.
Sir Dennis is keen to capture the European market and lunches with Swiss businessman Mr. Henri. Malcolm and Terry then both lie and impress Sir Dennis by telling him that they regularly watch European TV via their satellite dishes.
The Rev. Doyle asks for the Medfords' help in equipping a church youth club, so Terry builds a table tennis table.
A council refuse van backs into the Medfords' car with June in it but the council will not pay compensation, claiming that she was in the wrong, so Terry takes them to court.
When the Medfords find educated tramp Owen Midgeley sleeping in their shed, Terry wants rid of him, but June is charmed when he mows their lawn.
Having begun a fitness and diet regime Terry is shocked when he believes he overhears the doctor, on the telephone, saying that he is terminally ill.
When Tarquin and Melinda get a new front door ,June decides she would like one, but Terry is too mean to have the new one fitted and does it himself.
Sir Dennis asks the Medfords to host Middle Eastern prince Abdul Aziz, with whom he hopes to do a deal.
Sir Dennis' loyal secretary Miss Fennell is desolate, when instead of proposing to her as she had hoped, he transfers her to another department.
Terry is longing to play for the firm's cricket team but Sir Dennis is not keen, given that he thinks Terry is a poor player.
