Loving his newfound power as head of Ewing Oil, Bobby works to accomplish something that Jock or J.R. never did -- buy a refinery.
Sue Ellen is arrested for the shooting and the Ewings abandon her completely, not coming to her aid. After bail is posted by an unknown person, a session with a psychiatrist reveals the real shooter.
Bobby has a hard time running Ewing Oil with J.R. undermining his every decision. Meanwhile, Miss Ellie finds the gun that was used in the shooting and Sue Ellen, full of guilt, has nightmares about J.R.'s shooting.
J.R., paralyzed after the shooting, undergoes further surgery to help save his life. While J.R. is in the hospital, Bobby takes over Ewing Oil for the time being. Meanwhile, Sue Ellen worries that she was the shooter as the police identify more suspects in the shooting.
J.R. is rushed to the hospital in critical condition following his gunshot wound. As the police investigate, they discover many people have the motive for shooting J.R. and everyone patiently waits by J.R.'s bedside hoping he will wake up and identify the shooter.
